Allegan Homeless Solution is comprised of a group of caring advocates of the homeless in Allegan County. Currently, staff from seven local non-profits serve on the committee with a very simple goal: to house the homeless.
Our work is meant to be a simple, immediate response to housing the homeless while acknowledging that there is nothing simple about housing the homeless.
Allegan Homeless Solutions is funded by a small endowment administered by the Allegan County Community Foundation. With a total annual budget of $2,000 /-, we strive to provide hotel nights for those who can’t be on the streets for medical reasons, weather conditions, or for those with children. For those who are staying in places not meant for habitation, we hope to provide various basic needs items until they can find appropriate housing.
Starting in 2016, access to funds allowed Allegan Homeless Solutions to house those who were in desperate need of immediate housing. Most often it takes just one or two nights of housing stability for a family or individual before they gain access to the services available from other sources.
To date, Allegan Homeless Solutions has provided hotel nights for
… a paraplegic gentleman who found himself homeless and out of money
… for a family of four who just couldn’t keep up with the bills any longer and found themselves sleeping in their car
…for a woman and her 8 year old son facing immediate eviction.
Each of these cases were urgent and without the help of Allegan Homeless Solutions would have resulted in sleeping outdoors in winter conditions.
